Where Are You Heading In 2007?

December 14, 2006

As the year draws to a close and we begin to look ahead at what 2007 has in store, it is once again time to reflect on where we have been over the last 12 months, but more importantly, where we are going. If you can answer that question, the next question should be to ask yourself where your competition is going. In the coming year, what will be the prevailing trends on the competitive horizon? According to CIO Insight Magazine's Top Trends of 2007, the New Year will be all about better execution and improving the business process.

Ranking at the top of the list will be process improvement. Included will be process automation and an improvement in customer service in an effort to increase productivity while at the same time lowering operating costs. Also at the top of the list for companies across the country will be re-engineering their existing website to make it more engaging. There will be a greater focus on customer satisfaction with online products, as well as a move to make the message more entertaining with video. From a customer satisfaction point of view, the Customer Service department will be seeing a tune up. While customer acquisition will still be important, the focus on improving the delivery of services to existing customers will be re-addressed to meet the needs of a changing market. Often forgotten in the rush to deploy the latest in advanced technologies, service delivery will be a big part of the overall 2007 tune-up.

Another trend of the New Year will be in the area of the underutilized data that most companies have readily available, but aren't using to its full potential. IT executives will seek out ways to put that untapped information to work and continue to seek ways to glean more information for valuable analysis of the marketplace. Along with putting the data to work, there will be an equal if not greater momentum seen in the governance of that information. Good oversight and the application of rules and rights over IT decision making will lead to more effective collection of the data and methods of processing it. Those IT decision makers, such as the CIO, have previously been seen in a role serving as "Influencer", but the coming year will find them actively in positions more as "Creator of Strategy" along with other departmental executives. IT executives will be seen in more and more tactical roles, making greater contributions to the overall business strategy than ever before.
